Book Club

I have been meaning to write a post, but have been too distracted (or disorganized)! I have new pictures to share, though I could not find the connector for the camera to the computer in the office today. Maybe tomorrow!

Since my last post we have been BUSY! Not only with work which you know is crazy, but we had a progressive dinner for charity, a Married Couple's get together for pizza and wine with people from church, two birthday parties for friends of Eli, and I had my much anticipated Book Club meeting!

There are about 8 ladies or so in our book club and we are going to try and keep it small so get togethers don't get overwhelming. I meant to take pictures at the meeting, but of course, forgot my camera. We all LOVE our meetings! They are the perfect hen party...food, wine, and lots of yack, yack, yack!

I won't bring up the 1st two books we read since I don;t have the info on them anyway. The last book we read was called "Princess", by Jean Sasson (do you underline the title of a book or use quotes? Duh...). It is supoosed to be a true account of "life behind the veil in Saudi Arabia" according to one royal princess. It is riveting!! None of us could stop reading it! She describes the torture and honor killings that haunt many women in the Muslim extremist countries. Having the freedoms that we do here in America, it is so difficult to imagine not being born with basic human rights. In extreme homes, the father and brothers decide from one day to the next whether the women in the house live or die. The family is ashamed and mourns if a daughter is born, and until recently, female births would go undocumented - as if the person never existed. Education is not encouraged for women, and in many cases is forbidden, and even if you are educated you may not use it to do what you wish. Marriages are arranged (many times to men decades older with three other wives!), you may not worship with the men, and you may not drive as a woman. Basically, your life is not your own.

The killings were the worst. She talked about friends of she and her sister who were killed by their families...one was sentenced to death by drowning in the family pool, one was banished to a room of utter darkness...never to see the light of day or hear another human voice until she died, some were stoned to death. Uggh...makes one shudder. So if you are interested in a gripping human rights story...read this book.

Our current book is "Texas vs. Davis" by Mike Cochran. The book is about the real life murders of three people (including a child) in a multi-million dollar mansion back in the mid-70's. The alleged murderer is a very wealthy man here in town who never went to prison (I think). He still lives here to this day. We are reading it b/c 1) it is a true story and takes place in Fort Worth, Texas, and 2) b/c our next book club meeting will be at Amy's house...she lives over in the area where the murders happened, and it will be close to Halloween when we meet again so it will be creepy! They don't sell this book at bookstores anymore. We had to all get ours on Amazon.com for .65 cents plus shipping! I just got mine last night and couldn't wait to get to reading.

If anyone is bored and wants some riveting reads....the above two will do the trick! Please share any good reads you know!

For sure, you girls are reading with such intensity. So many times a group can easily get off the beaten path.
Do you each read a different book and share...or all read the same book and share?
Years from now you will look at your books as treasures.
Also, you will wonder why you chose certain ones.
Glad you shared it with us.

We all decide at the end of each meeting which book we will read next. We all read the same book. We decided to read the Princess book to spice it up a little. We had just read Secret Life of Bees and Memory Keeper's Daughter. Both were good, but a little boring (I did not finish either one). The next suggested book was something about a Friday Night Knit Club to which a couple of us said PLEASE NO! It was a huge book and I knew it could not possibly keep my attention with a title like that. So the upcoming hostess thought about it for a week and picked Princess b/c she knew we would not ever call it boring! She was right, ha!
